The Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature Working Group

The SUN Working Group's initiative aimed to standardize the classification of uveitides, a group of diseases characterized by inflammation inside the eye. The group's work involved four phases: informatics, case collection, case selection, and machine learning. The informatics phase standardized language to describe each uveitis type and mapped terms to individual diseases. The case collection phase involved inputting 5,766 cases into a database, averaging 100-250 cases for each uveitis type. The classification criteria are intended primarily for research and differ from diagnostic criteria, emphasizing statistical specificity. This classification aims to provide clarity and improve the accuracy of clinical research and treatment approaches for uveitis. The classification criteria were published in 2021.
